At a time when most designers and store owners are rapidly and ruthlessly retreating to the safer pastures of less stock and cheaper merchandise, Hu's Shoes owner Marlene Hu Aldaba is moving her brand in a different direction: expansion. But this time, she's thinking outside the shoe box, stocking her new M Street boutique, Hu's Wear, with high-end, fashion-forward clothes.
Which prompts the question: A new luxe clothing store? In this economic climate?
People "are looking for things that are special and different," Aldaba says. "If they are going to part with their money, it has to be something no one else has."
And so it goes that the brands at Hu's Wear are markedly different from those sold at most District shops. Nearly all of the 15 clothing lines available are regionally exclusive to the store. A vibe of understated elegance defines this mellow footwear emporium. Simply adorned with Chinese wedding-bed panels and an antique altar-turned-register area, the less-is-more atmosphere provides an ideal setting for shoes by Repetto, Lanvin, and Martin Margiela.
Luckymag.com Best New Shopping Cities: Washington DCMarlene Hu Aldaba knows shoes -- be they her own edgy-chic Alexander McQueen boots or the Martin Margiela Lucite wedges and Stella McCartney mirrored gold pumps that line the shelves of her Georgetown boutique, Hu's Shoes (3005 M St. NW, 202-342-0202, www.hushoes.com).
The inspiration for this minimalist heel haven came from Aldaba's boyfriend and business partner, Eric Eden, who spied a similar shop in Chicago and wanted to replicate it in Washington. "We realized there aren't really that many high-end shoe boutiques in D.C.," explains Aldaba, right.
Hu's Shoes is certainly high-end: Don't be surprised to see stilettos with four-figure price tags. But the blow to the bank account is softened -- somewhat -- by Aldaba's eye for color and form. You'll see right-off-the-runway patent platforms, glossy fuchsia sling-backs worthy of Alexis Carrington and python booties rendered almost ethereal in crisp, icy white.
"I try not to do the basics," Aldaba says. "When people come here, they want something special."
